white oak

Ecologists say the following trees, shrubs, and vines live along the Mystic:

Alder
Apple
Ash
Birch
Black Oak
Blackberries
Grapes
Elm
Locust
Poplar
Red Maple
Red Oak
Sumac
White Oak
Wild Cherry
Willow

Several invasive exotic plants have colonized the habitats around the Mystic. These species crowd out native species, and that means less food for the animals that depend on native plants. The worst offenders include Phragmites, Multiflora Rose, Norway Maple, Sycamore Maple, Oriental Bittersweet and Japanese Knotweed.
